multi level stairs
« on: October 25, 2014, 12:15:27 pm »

OK, usually I do stairs straight up and down.  A down stair with multiple up/down stairs below that and then an up stair at the bottom.

However, I am working on a throne room that I project to be about seven to ten z-levels in depth with smoothing and engraving done on each level before I channel downward.  What I want to do is have a downward staircase starting at the top and proceeding down to the middle of the throne room.  Probably a wide staircase about 20 spaces across.

                               S  (multi level stair case)

T                           S

I tried to angle these in a small area away from my fortress but they would only mine the down step and not the next level up/down.

If a visual helps (not mine..but a picture I found): The main entrance staircase.

You have to think of DF stairs differently than minecraft or RL stairs.  The stairs dictate direction, not any specified length.  You need both the up and the down stairs to travel.  Make the stairs
-ownstairs (j)
-upstairs (u)

j
uj
 uj
  uj
   u

The dwarves will have to travel horizontally to the new stairs and then vertically to the next level, each time.  Only ramps can confer vertical and horizontal movement at once.  Use ramps if you really want that.

Use ramps, but like this:
R
  00R
       00R
            00R            R=Ramp 0=Empty space

It'll be like really big stairs!

Yeah, it helps to think of staircases as being spiral staircases - they make more sense that way.
