fortification and channel
« on: March 15, 2008, 02:05:00 pm »

If i have two parallel walls of fortification, with a ditch in between them, can invaders shoot through the fortification, down through the channel? or will that fortification stop it?

Also, how hard will it be for my marksdwarves to shoot through to fortifications?

I think that unless the person shooting is standing right next to the fortification, they have a much harder time hitting anything. Dunno about building two fortification with a channel between. I would probably just have 1 fortification+channel so the goblins can't get to the outside part of the fortification.

EDIT: Unless by channel you meant like a passageway. In that case I think both your dwarves and goblin arches would be on the fame footing. What I've done previously was have a wall that was 1 z-level above where the goblins were going to walk since you can shoot at stuff on other z-levels.

nah i screwed up a bit with my defences. i had a nice channel around the perimeter, but then i accidently dug under it to make a stockpile. (thats what happens when im tired), so now if there are enough goblin archers they can press up close to the channel, and shoot into my fort, killing/wounding anyone getting a drink. I know there are other ways to fix this, but i wanted to try the double fortification thing.

Any arrow or bolt fired through fortifications from the next square over passes through immediately.

Any arrow or bolt fired from further away MAY pass through, depending on the skill of the shooter.  Elite marksmen can usually get their bolts or arrows through pretty easily, but a double row of fortifications should stop the lesser archers pretty effectively.

Addendum to previous: Arrows and bolts can't be fired through any solid walls (e.g. without fortifications).  If you want to make that area completely arrow-proof, just don't carve fortifications (arrow loops) in any of the walls.
