Weapon Racks and a few other newb questions...
« on: September 23, 2006, 04:53:00 am »

Hey all,

Really like the game. I'm pathetically addicted.

1) How do you tell if your weapon racks/armor stands are loaded? One of my armor stands seems to have a bunch of clothes, etc. in the same square as it, so I assume that means it's loaded, but you can't view it the way you do with bins/barrels. (Right?) I'm trying to put weapons racks with ballista arrows near my ballista.

2) How can you tell how many unused weapons/armor/etc you have? The stocks screen lists the total number of weapons, right?

3) I've got attacked by snakemen, kobolds, goblin thiefs, and elephants (somehow they got *into* my base... wasn't pretty at all; my broker was wounded, never recovered, and went beserk, along with one or two other dwarves. Can't say I was too sad to see him go, though...)... so will I get laid siege too? It kinda sounds like fun. I haven't done anything to piss anyone off, but will goblins come, or did I misread the other forum posts?

4) Uh, thought I had more, guess not. Wiki's great, btw.

Love the game!

Thanks.

Oh yeah!
4) My place is overrun with horses. I think they're slowing down the traffic in the main hall (planning wasn't my strong point here). Should I feel guilty butchering them? They don't serve any working purpose, right? (*Ahem* That was separate from the guilt question, of course!) I really don't need the meat, though. Farming worked out really well, and I always buy out the meat on the caravans, 'cause I figure what else am I going to do with these crafts, and then I'm stuck with a cubic crapload of the stuff.

1) Look at the content of structures with T, and moving the cursor over (or near) the structure you want to look inside of. Armor on an armor stand will be shown in this way.

2) I dont think you can tell which stand is/is not used, except to look at each one.

3) If you have enough gold and kill enough thieves, you will eventually be seiged by evil forces. Humans, elves, and other dwarves however, will only seige if you piss them off by taking their goods or angering their diplomats.

4) Butcher everything... Horses, mules, and even cows. The only creature that should be exempt from this however are Dogs, since they can be trained to a useful war dog state, a protective animal which doubles as a pet. Otherwise, the only reason why you'll want to keep upwards of 10 horses alive is for a continual source of free food (meat)

If one of your dwarves love an animal, it's worth keeping it alive in a cage to be admired.  It seems to produce lots of happy thoughts.  You can let it be adopted as a pet, too, but that means it will wander aimlessly around your fortress.

Thanks a bunch, guys!

Horses are still being slaughtered... I debated setting up another butcher's shop to speed it up but I don't have enough barrels, anyways, so this way the (multiple) carpenter's shops have some hope of keeping up with the butcher, the farmers, and the brewer.

Still haven't managed to get the ballista arrows loaded on to any weapon racks; they're cluttering up the siege shop and the jewelers (who knew that was what "encrust ammo" meant?). I even made little mini-barracks with just weapon racks set on ballista arrows only and all materials. But I did figure out how to see what was in the other weapon racks. Apparently there is some leather armor on the stand and some on the ground beneath the stand. Go figure.

Also, made it to the magma. Do I really have to set up shop right next to the chasm like the wiki says? Can't floodgate it out? (I was hit by 2 firemen... one killed my legendary minor and another dwarf real quick and then started busting down doors going to my base, until he went through like 5 stonefall traps. The other fireman was taken down by 2 or 3 dogs who happened to be there (friends of the next miner, I guess) and did absolutely no damage whatsoever. Go figure.)

P.S. I have a possessed dwarf in jail. It's pretty funny to see him sitting there, blinking "!". Wonder if his sentence will run out in time? Haha...

Oh, and one of my metalsmiths "violated a production" order and got hammered to death. What does that mean? (Incidentally, I think the metalsmiths have probably the shortest life expectancy... they always seem to go crazy or, I guess, violate production orders.)

Oh, and is there any way to block up again something that I didn't mean to mine?

You could put up statues, floodgates, and/or doors.

Or a support, if you've accidentally dug out too large a room.

support doesn't block though.. (walks right through it, like most furnitures)

on the other hand, statues don't count towards support (you know.. to counter cave-in) but can't walk through it.

talking about massive snakemen infestation, I had about 2 times 5 sneakemen comming out of my wells in my main hall, causing minor wounds and a huge mess.

What's the quickest way to clean up 15x15 rooms filled with blood? or do I need a load of buckets to make it go faster?

The quickest way would be updating to the version that started cleaning all the blood up once a new season rolls in. Then waiting for spring/summer/fall/winter to arrive.
