This may have been addressed but I cannot find information on the wiki ...

In dwarf mode, your dwarves just go from no skill up to legendary,

but in adventure mode, you can see the numerical values

so, when you reach legendary, you start out legendary at 0/2000

when you fill that up, you are still legendary, but it is 0/2100

then again, fill it up, it goes to 0/2200, then 0/2300, which is as far as i've gotten

and so on

does it ever end?

Nope.  Dwarves can also get legendary.  Syntax is:

+x legendary.  So if you are 2 levels above legendary, you are a +2 legendary.

I think the maximum was legendary +5

also, eventhough it is all called legendary, the outcome is still different

There is some information in the wiki archive about levels beyond legendary.  I don't know if it is still accurate.

Aside from guesstimation, nope.

And as Akroma said, the limit is +5 legendary (in adventurer mode they won't go above x/2500 in a skill, which can easily be reached quickly by playing a strong creature like a demon or elephant and just attacking everyone in the town you start in  )

I don't remember what version I'm on -- a couple versions old, I think -- but my adventurers are able to gain skill indefinitely, well beyond 3400 experience a level.
