« on: July 17, 2007, 05:40:00 am »

hello everyone,
i've built a fishery, got plenty of raw turtles in a food pile but when i'm tryin to assign an order to prepare it, the dwarves cancel it saying - cant prepare fish - need unrotten raw fish

is it a bug or what?

do the fish have x's next to the names?
That means they are rotten if so...

Hmm, I don't think turtles are fish.  lol

Turtles don't need to be cleaned before being eaten. Personally I think it's kind of nasty that dwarves will eat raw turtle, but then, I'm not a dwarf.

I'm pretty confident turtles do need to be cleaned before being eaten. Not sure about the rest of the dillemma, however.

Raw turtles do in fact need processed in a fishery before eating.
Check to see ("k") that the turtles are in fact "raw turtle" instead of "turtle"
Then make sure that the "raw turtles" are accessable (no locked doors or closed flood gates or filled moats blocking the path.)
Barring that, they might be tasked to haul to a stockpile ? Or to be cooked ?
Or, as the other gentleman pointed out, they may be rotten. Use "K" and view them to read the description and see if they say they are rotten.

Once you've gone through that check list, let us know if you still have problems I keep thinking I'm missing something

Id just like to point out that having 'x's around their name does not mean they are rotten. It means they have taken damage, most likely from temperature. It is best to keep food stockpiles inside the cave where the temperature is regulated.

as a side statement, if your food stockpile is outside your entire seed supply can be wiped out by rain.

I'm just starting to learn the game, and I had this problem yesterday. I didn't realise that each workshop blocks off some tiles, and so my dwarf entered the fishery, build it, and then was trapped there. Here was my problem:

code:

#########
##XX.#...
##.@.#...
##.X.#...
###.####.
.........
#########

The X's are impassible, and so he trapped himself in the room when he build the workshop. I had to dig him out, but once I did, he started to happily clean and prepare turtles.

IIRC The Turtles you buy from caravans are in fact "Turles' and therefore as already prepared.  You only need to prepare ones your fisherman or traps catch.
