Zooming Issue (STARTER PACK) - Solved
« on: October 01, 2014, 11:25:10 pm »

Right, I'll jump straight into my question.

I've played DF for 5 years now, I started with vanilla, as most did.

I then moved onto Lazy Newb Pack for 3 odd years, I've never had a problem with LZP,

Then this new "Starter Pack Launcher" as Lazy Newb Pack was discontinued.

In Lazy Newb Pack AND Vanilla you can scroll, or press [ ] to zoom in and out, when you zoom in and out, the map tiles get bigger as you zoom in, and get smaller as you zoom out (as a zoom should work) This also makes the menu on the sides text increase in size as you zoom in. No problem here, It's great!!

Now for some reason, this new Starter Pack does not want me to zoom in, infact no. It lets me zoom in, but not the map, oh no.. Just the menu... When I scroll, the map will jitter about and the menu will zoom in, I've ALSO tried this with the "lazy newb pack" that is included with the Starter Pack download and the same thing happens, you can't zoom in !!!

I Googled to see if maybe Dwarf Fortress simply removed zoom for the map (for whatever reason they'd do that) but I found nothing.

I hope I've explain this well enough, I could make a small video showing you the problem, and unless something is very very wrong with my computer and or my download (Ive re downloaded it twice now) then I'm assuming everyone who uses the current starter pack cannot zoom in.

If you've bothered to read all this and if you're going to post the cure, and or anything that could help I'd be very thankful ! I've recently got back into Dwarf Fortress.. Well I say that, this new starter pack also has crashed on me 3 times switching to summer, so I'm really at a loss.

There's a couple of starter packs...not sure which one you are referring to.

If it's this one: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=126076.0, by PeridexisErrant then this is a key binding change in version r3.  If you check one of the last pages he tells me which folder in the .init folder to copy into r3 from r2.  I did this and it fixed it for me.

The recent version of PE's Starter Pack is a bit buggy and is confusing the newbies and lurkers. Unsure why its still up. I was thinking of just sticking with an older version until they figure out the kinks involving the new TWBT plugins.

ragincajun, was it just an interface.txt file replacement? I can't find the post you are referring to. Could you just post the text file contents here instead of having Judge Dredd download a whole new version just to get one file? (Or I can in a couple hours. Not at my comp right now.)

But if you still need an older version, 40.13 r2 can be found here near the bottom. Peridexis Dropbox

How many licks does it take to get to the [candy] center of a Dwarf Fortress?

probably an issue with keybinds

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

Yes, that is what we've both said. Now, from what I understand, it seems to be from the TWBT plugins using different zoom binds for map and text now. Try using Ctrl o and p to zoom the map area.

I was in a rush this morning.  Sorry.

It was the interface.txt inside the data/init folder.  I renamed the one in r3 to interface_r3Original and then pasted in a copy of that text doc from version r2.  Keybindings work fine with the newer r3 fixes.

I have had a few crashes with r3 in game which I hadn't experienced before.  So that will fix your keybinding issue, but you may just want to stick with r2 until everythings sorted out.  Sorry for the lack of info this morning, I didn't have access to the files to see exactly which one I moved.

I actually had no idea about Ctrl P+O, I suppose this is a work around for now, I was freaking out though.
I like to use Ascii so you can imagine being stuck zoomed really quite far out gives you a migraine in 2 minutes flat.
You've all helped a lot and I will look into the interface swap over as I have R3 and R2.

As for the constant crashing I might honestly just have to play Lazy Newb Pack for a while if it persists, Thanks guys!
