Dwarf Fortress is well known for being extremely realistic... But sometimes, it's just bizarre. The water freezes at night, it literally insta-freezes, isn't a "slow" process. So, if you are caugh by the "insta-freeze" you are fucked. Yeah, your adventurer died in a ice cube.

But hey, at least with recent updates when the ice thaws you'll be able to retrieve his/her items! They used to be completely atomised.

Yes, because water freezes when it gets cold, and nights are rather cold.

Can use the 'I' command (interact) to use a campfire to melt ice in your inventory.. Far as I know that is the only thing campfires are used for (or affect, anyway) in adventure mode.. Can also build campfires as blockades to avoid or guide enemies :>

Can't wait til campfires will actually spread fire, burn enemies, and create harmful smoke :| Maybe even some food cooking and wound cauterizing someday

Additionally you can also use campfires to melt snow to fill your waterskin. Very useful for the arctic adventurer.

You can set plants ablaze but to my knowledge these player-made fires don't spread.
