Really REALLY stupid question about workshops
« on: September 30, 2014, 09:10:57 pm »

Hey guys, new dwarf fortress player here. Been wanting to get into it for a long while, but never found the time. Finally downloaded it and read up on a few guides. Started off well enough: Made a quick living in a nearby mountain, have trees chopped down, got my dwarves working on some sleeping quarters and have some plants gathered. Here's where my problem begins to arise. I made a crafts workshop, and set it to make rock crafts on repeat so I'd have some shit to sell to the first traders to come by. Problem is, the dwarves won't move the rock crafts from the workshop to the set up stockpile. Not sure why it isn't working, but I'd appreciate help.

Furthermore, some advice for how to set up bins/beds/basically ANY item without having to make a stockpile, set it so that only the (bed, bin, item in question) can be moved there, wait for dwarf to move it there, and then remove stockpile. It's getting a little difficult to do that over and over.

My current stockpile for the stone crafts workshop is a 3x3 area right next to it (5 or so tiles away) covered in wood bins. Then I put a custom stockpile over the bins for ALL finished goods to be put there. Seeing as the rock crafts are the only things i'm making, I would like to think that the dwarves would move them into the bins, but no such luck.

Holy shit, nevermind I think I figured it out. I had the global setting to 9 bins, which prevented dwarves from using any apparently. I set that to 0 and then they moved all of the wagon's finished goods cargo to it :( Then I set it so they ONLY take from the workshop, and it seems to be working now, except for the crap from the wagon cluttering up the bins, but whatevs. Hope the traders like wooden splints!  :D

Skullbot1,

The number of reserved bins and barrels (displayed in the stockpile menu) is the minimum number of bins the fort has to have free.  If this number is 0<n, then you need to have at least n+1 bins (or barrels) in order for the dwarves to use them for general storage.  The reserved bins and barrels are used only for jobs requiring them directly (e.g. brewing MUST have a free barrel in which to put the alcohol, otherwise the brewing job will be cancelled).

To place beds/containers/other random furniture, you need to go into the 'b'uild menu, and scroll down until you find the furniture-type that you want to place.  For some very common ones (e.g. beds, cabinets, coffers), you'll quickly learn which keys to hit without needing to scroll.  For example, to place a bed you would type:
'b' -> access the general build menu
move the cursor to where you would like to place the bed
'b' -> select "beds"
'x' -> expand the list so that you can place a specific bed instead of the closest bed (optional, can be useful if trying to get a room with a certain quality-level of furniture)
'enter' -> bed is placed, a free dwarf with "Furniture Hauling" will grab the chosen bed and build it

Also, traders currently will accept anything you want to trade, whether or not it makes any sort of sense (the only exceptions are elves, who will not accept anything wood-based or decorated with wood).

If software was real world, then it'd be something equivalent of hitting a nail with a hammer and having a building collapse on the other side of town.

Don't worry people, sometimes -moments occur

Ah, much thanks. I really appreciate the help, as most of the guides I've read are pretty tough to decode. It would be a hell of a lot easier to learn if I knew someone IRL who could teach me :P

Which guides are you using CapnDuck and TinyPirate's videos & playalongs are pretty good and should get you nearer to "someone IRL". They're for old versions, so some stuff is wrong, but simple stuff like workshops, stockpiles, producing things, trading them, and so on, hasn't changed all that much.
