Version Stability
« on: September 18, 2014, 11:34:33 am »

It has probably been answered a million times but I can't find it. When can we expect the most bugs causing fps drop to be fixed? I want to start a community fortress but I'm afraid of fps death - should I want a month or two or it's currently as good as it will be?

From the dev updates, it seems that a number of the worst glitches may already have been fixed. Toady reported an fps double from the previous version when he ran a test save (presumably on an old-ish fort.)

Asking for ETAs when bugs will be fixed is pretty pointless. Toady doesn't give schedules for when he will do stuff (which is fine with me), and there is no guarantee that "most bugs causing fps drop" will ever be fixed, since it's pretty hard to say what is a bug and what is simply an unavoidable result of processing a huge data set.  He might find a huge problem and fix it next week, or things may never improve much.

He apparently did some fixes in the latest release. You can start your fort now, or wait a month or two, or wait a year or two. If you start it now and he fixes problems before you have real FPS issues, you're fine. If you wait a until he fixes the issues, you've just wasted the time while you wait. If you wait until things are "better" and he never finds/fixes things, you'll never start your fort. I'd say you should just go ahead and do it.

Have them killed. Nothing solves a problem quite as effectively as simply having it killed.

40.13 looks like a pretty good release.  The only glaring issue is the surface plants not being useful, but there is a mod that fixes that (without straying away from the vanilla feel).  Install the mod, then generate a new world.

I'm into the 3rd year of a fort and it is going well.  I've been saddled with (3) barons so far.  Two were because goblins overran some sites during the first year of the fort's existence and two of the original seven inherited the title of those sites.  The third is because we were promoted by the dwarven diplomat when the 3rd caravan arrived.
