What is the use of owning a wagon?

It acts as an automatic meeting area, which probably does more harm than good as your dwarves and tame animals will hang out there instead of in your fortress when they have nothing better to do.

You can make a meeting area anywhere else. I usually keep in until I need the place it is on.

You can, yes, but dwarves will still meet at the wagon. Each meeting area gets a portion of the available idle dwarves.

Each meeting area also attracts a portion of stray animals (tame) from your fort.  This means that if you have more than one meeting area, you will notice your animal population in constant migration from one to another, causing general congestion and assorted slow framerates.
