How to keep pets under control?
« on: August 26, 2006, 07:26:00 am »

The animal population of my castle seems to be very fertile, which is really getting problematic now.

Every 30 seconds a bitch or cat puts out another litter, and all my corridors (even the 2 space wide ones) are clutters with puppies and kittens, causing everything to slow down alot.

Is there any end to it, or can one create a animal shelter or something compareable?

Well, it gets less and less funny.
Current dog population is >140.

And the strange thing is: they seem all to follow a single dwarf (or at least most of them).

this means whereever this dwarf goes, everything breaks down...

Butchershop is now busy making hotdogs, but he can just keep up with the spawnrate.

Like SynthOrange implies -- dogs, thems good eatin'.  Cats, not so much, but I think they eat vermin, so they're OK...

An idea: if you have a room with a high pet traffic through it, make all doors impassable to pets. Animals would still be able to get inside with dwarves that are going through this room. Once you have enough animals inside, forbid all the doors and flood the room.

Hm.
That seemed a rather inelegant solution.

There should be some kind of dampening in the engine to prohibit expotention pet breeding.

I tried assigning some of my strays to cages, which seemed to slow down the rather--well, if they consumed resources, I'd call it Malthusian--growth rate of the cats.  Also, dwarves do so love to be comforted by wonderful creatures in cages.

Creating multiple butcher shops /kitchens = higher rate of production of hotdogs.

Cats are the only things giving me a problem at the moment. Dogs are easy to get rid of; first, you choose a victim and assign him 50 or so of your dogs via workdogs.

Wait for him to go to bed and night, and flood.

Flooding, it seems, is the optimal solution to just about every problem in this game, heh.

Why would you do such a thing? IMHO it's disrespectful to drown perfectly edible animals, and dogs are an essential part of a balanced breakfast. And, as of the latest version, you could have cats for brunch, too. Mmmmm-mmm good.
