I know you all know this kind of thing already happens, but It annoyed me enough to warrant a whinge:

I managed to buy out the first dwarven caravan with a rock mechanism and a bin full of random crafts, and all they had was lovely lovely food which would come in handy for the massive amount of immigrants I anticipated after the outside world heard of my wealth [of mechanisms]....

except all the food rotted on the trade depot floor before any of the lazy dwarves put the things in the food stockpile. Grr!!

The future looks grim.

I've only ever had that happen once, and that was when I bought more food then I had storage space (whoops.)

However, what you could do if you fear spoilage, is just trade for a couple food items, then wait for your dwarves to move them... then a couple more, etc.

Nothing's saying you have to buy out the entire caravan all at once.
