Actually babies do crawl, it was one of my greates discoveries, but not much faster than a severely wounded creature.

The more amazing thing is: did the baby get thrown through the battlements?

Also does this mean flying stuff counts as a missile and thus can pass through fortifications?

Oh god, I just had images of baby-throwing catapults in my head.

Also: it is entirely probable that your first marksdwarf had more injuries than you're aware of.  I'm not sure if you know that all organ injuries always appear below the list of body parts, and you have to scroll down to see them.

No flying creatures on the units list, like say a skeletal giant eagle?

You can allow or stop your dwarves from eating these mushrooms, but it's entirely optional and doesn't turn Dwarf Fortress into Dwarf hookah-smoking pad.

Nope, at the time there were only Deer and Foxes on the map. But then I started getting goblin ambushes up the hoo-ha. So many, in the end, that I would have welcomed a siege instead of all the ambushes. Either way, they utterly wiped me out. :/

I suspect it was a goblin that did this. Perhaps a snatcher took her baby, and she shot the goblin, causing him to drop the baby in the water?

But I never found a goblin body, or any blood outside. And no announcements had been made prior to that of thieves/snatches/ambushes. It iz ein myzterie.

I've started a new fort now, on the side of an extremely steep mountain. There's about 20 z-levels of ground outside, and there just happens to be no slopes on the rocks where I started, which should give me a long time of peace before anything comes a knockin'. Of course, there's no trees either, so I have had to dig down to absolute-ground level in order to give the traders a route in... but that's down such a long tunnel that I have room for all sorts of defences. Plus there's a chasm and an underground river for me to find. *Rubs hands together gleefully*

Thanks, whoever it was who suggested Region Prospector to me. :3

A glassmakers baby was dropped in the magma when the fortress guard decided to give her a punishment beating in my fort. This is probably not what happened to you but I couldn't help mentioning it on the subject of dying babies.

From what I've seen babys do crawl about the place, the difficulty lies in the fact that a baby will always take a direct root to where it wants to go, ignoring any hazards like cliffs and moats that are in the way.

I had a moat that had some ramps on one side and a cliffs everywhere else, the baby would fall off the bridge, then go to the ramp, then, instead of of traveling a few squares and go over the bridge would promptly fall back into the moat again, this happened until it drowned.
