Can you drown fish?

Ok not exactly the right way to put it, but if you have a chanel with a set of flood gates and a fish swims through and you seal it and wait X seasons for the water to evaporate will the fish eventually die due to not being in the water?

ekkud Egenid was supposedly killed by one of those "elephant" things the commoners have started dreaming up. I swear he killed himself just to piss me off with their lame fantasy.
I do wonder how he managed to break his own back though.
