I saw a 50% increase in FPS by using dfhack's "clean map item" command to remove all the fruit and leaves that had accumulated in the 8 years since my fortress was established. Are these "spatters" not being cleared away automatically on a seasonal or yearly basis?

Mine have been there for about a year now, so probably not. I did notice some leaves disappear due to rain but that's not really... much

Seems like this is indeed what is happening.  Might be worth a bug report as I don't see one addressing this specific problem.

Good to know that you can use DFHack to clean it up.  Now we have an idea why there's a sudden FPS drop in the second year.  A very subtle elven attack if ever I've seen one!

I tried this in my seventh year, but honestly there was no a single frame per second of difference so I reverted a save (that was last week with DFHack for v.0.40.10). So I would check it out on any particular machine. Also - this stuff (flowers, fruit) is cleared or changed seasonally. I don't have seven layers of plums. But most spatter is not - blood, FB extracts and similar. Dwarves sometimes clean this, rain does (but only some of it - the blood is most pertinent), but most stays.

Can someone help me do this? I've never used DF Hack before. Is there even one for the new version?

There is a dfhack for 0.40.10 at http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=139553.0

Installation and the cleaning commands are probably the easiest things about dfhack.

The machine, and embark size and biome (4x/heavily wooded) probably do play a role. However, I am surprised you wouldn't see any improvement at all. You did use the "clean map item" command, not the confusingly similar "clean items" command?

Item spatters may be cleared by some mechanism but they are certainly not being cleared seasonally. I had a persimmon tree growing inside my fortress. It dropped leaves in fall; I ordered it chopped down in early winter. Next winter the leaves were still there, and now (the summer following) the leaves still remain.

Could be the rain. It wouldn't reach inside.

I tried this on my heavily forested map, and received one full extra FPS. Considering how low it is on average, that one average was great.
