AQUIFER BUG

Any water from an aquifer is making any stone it touches an Aquifer! It killed my fortress and now I'm REALLY mad, because I turned aquifers OFF!

Wait, what? Can we have some more details, please? Screenshots would be nice.
And are you sure the stone isn't just damp?

Hard science is like a sword, and soft science is like fear. You can use both to equally powerful results, but even if your opponent disbelieve your stabs, they will still die.

I can try again, I save scummed

Basically, I hit an aquifer while digging a room for a cloth industry. I realized what was happening, and so tried smoothing. Unfortunately, some new wall shad been converted to aquifer and were making they're own water.

I tried walls, but the natural walls around them converted to aquifer on one side and dripped out another. Screenies soon, how do I take them?

Might also toss up your save on DFFD.  That way we can take a look.  Helps to confirm and helps doubly if it is a bug because Toady will need a save to figure out what happened.

If you've got seasonal saves, a point before the aquifer went crazy would be best.  Just show us where to dig to get the party started.

how to give us screens:
press printscreen button when what you want is on screen, go to an image editing program (like mspaint) and paste.  crop as appropriate then save and upload to an image sharing site (like imgur) then link the image url in a post here, like so:
Code: [Select]

ok I uploaded the save to DFFD. Just dig out the designated area and you should find it.

Sorry for the delay, had to pick the kids up from school and they wanted to play at the park for an hour before we came home.

Anyway, I think I found your problem.  The first thing I noticed was that the aquifer that's causing you all the problems is actually 1z above where that dig site is, so when you dug out that first hunk of stone, it didn't matter how much smoothing you did because the water was pouring in from the ceiling.  So likely what you were seeing was not a bug, but the aquifer emptying into that chamber from above.  I'm in the process of seeing if the aquifer goes up another level, or if it's just at z+1.

From personal experience, I know that stone that gets touched by aquifer water does not transform into aquifer stone.  I've punched through at least 4 aquifers in 40.10 alone, and 3 of those involved a drain into the stone layer and off the map.  Were aquifers causing a kind of viral aquifer infection, I'd have seen it.

However, to prove that the case, I'm going to purposefully dump the aquifer above the room into it, drain it away, and then let it all dry.

Give me several hours to pull that off.  Doing that with an aquifer is a bit complex and I have to plan my steps carefully so I don't cause a bigger problem than I can actually fix.  Have to punch through the ceiling in a controlled way without stranding my miners.  Will have to take it to the top of the aquifer and do a partial breech so I can actually stop the flow when it comes time to dry out the room.

EDIT: Nope, just the one z-level.  That makes things harder while at the same time, easier.

so go another level or so down for industry?

The reason I thought it was going viral, was water was still going into chambers from areas I had sealed off from the aquifer stone.

P.S. how is the fort layout so far?

Yeah, you'll want to go one deeper.  I successfully flooded that chamber with aquifer water and then drained it.  Everything acted precisely as one would expect from an aquifer.

The trick was to recognize that the profile created from mining everything but the damp stone would be impossible if the aquifer were on the same level.  There were 2 tiles of stone that couldn't possibly be made damp by an aquifer on the same level.

Anyway, here's my runthrough behind the spoiler:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

So far as your layout, can't say I'm a fan, really.  There are lots of areas you could improve on, but your farming setup struck me as particularly inefficient.  If there was one thing I'd say you really should do, it's create a specific seed stockpile with barrels disabled.  Being spammed with farming job cancels because somebody ran off with the barrel to get a seed from your deep dining rooms got old fast.  You may want to stage feeder piles for all your farming stuff so that it routs, rather than having it all just free-flow.

Yeah, I don't really know how to do that. Maybe you could help me? I know the barrel stuff, and I keep the seeds next to the farm usually. Maybe show me how to make a good layout over skype or something?

Anyways, thanks for the help, and more would be appreciated :)

It's actually not too hard.  First thing you want to do is disable barrels on your primary seed pile, which you said you have covered, so you're good there.

At this point there are two ways to do it.  The first is simple, takes less room, but is more labor intensive than the second method.  The second method is more complex and takes a little more room to do, but will cut down on the labor a bit.

1-stage method (simple):  Create a feeder pile right next to the primary seed pile. Set it take from anywhere and to give to the primary pile.  Set the primary pile to take from links only.  Using this method, your dwarves will deposit seeds into the feeder pile and then quickly move them over to the primary pile.  This saves a significant amount of canceled planting messages.

2-stage method (more complex):
First, create a seed pile down near your eating area, we'll call this the dining pile.  Set it to take from anywhere.  Next, create a small pile up near your primary pile, we'll call this the feeder pile.  Set the feeder pile to take from links only, and the dining pile to give to the feeder pile.  Set the primary pile to take from links only and set the feeder pile to give to the primary pile.  Doing this, dwarves will gather the seeds from the dining area and put them in the dining pile.  Then, the seeds will be moved from the dining pile to the feeder pile, probably all in a single barrel.  From there, the seeds will be quickly moved over to the

Your fort is kinda borderline on the distance.  I think it would benefit from using the 2-stage feeder method, but the labor inefficiency of using the simpler 1-stage method wouldn't be too bad.  Either way would be considerably better than your current seed setup.

So far as the feeder and dining piles go, they wouldn't need to be big.  2x2 would be plenty.  You could probably get away with 1 tile for both, but you might get more hauling cancellation messages that way.
