How can I salvage a world?
« on: May 08, 2008, 05:32:00 pm »

So let's say that I found a pretty nice region where I started a fortress, but due to many things, such as skeletal creatures and cave monsters, it is now pretty much lots forever and not worth claiming back.

I want to build a new fortress on the same site. Is there any way to clear it out of the save file or regenerate the world?

If you used a seed, you could type that in again I suppose.

Or just march in there to Reclaim it...  but if it's as badly swamped as you say, that may just be more sacrifices to the cause.

You can determine the worldgen settings by building a fort (anywhere) and then exporting an image of it; the game will also export your worldgen settings. Then build a new world, specifying those same settings, and you'll get the same world again but with no forts placed.

Thanks a lot, I can't wait trying  to fend off skeletal muskoxen, avoiding giant cave spider, flooding my fortress with an underground river full of cave river creatures and being raided by... kobolds... I thought I was safe behind those traps.

I should have recorded that adventure.

Kobolds are immune to traps. Fortunately, they also run as soon as they're discovered. If you simply tie down an animal at each of your entrances, you'll be protected from thieves.

Also, pretty much any untrained dwarven peasant can make mincemeat out of a kobold.  They might get hit a couple of times, but it's unlikely the kobold will be lucky enough to really hurt them.  If anything, the main problem I've had with drafting the dwarf that finds the kobold, is many dwarves aren't fast enough to catch the damn thing in the first place.

Goblin snatchers on the other hand are a bit more dangerous.
