If you had a setup like below:
code:
~~~~         ______
~~~          _  _ _
~~~~~1----2______ _
~~~~        _______
~~~~~         ___
You would dig the primary channels first (_) AND THEN dig out the longest possible channel (1-2) which would hook up the channels to the liquid. [If the dwarf acts retarded and sits on the 1, suspend construction, let him suspend, and then reactivate. This will make the dwarf consider a new position; try to get him to sit on the 2 -- as far from the source as possible.
Alternately, replace the 1 with a floodgate. You'll just have to spend extra time hooking it up and activating it... But dwarves are much much less likely to drown.]
However, hopefully in the next version, the dwarf should be smart enough to stand outside of the channel to build it, and you shouldn't have to worry about dwarves killing themselves... Hopefully.
I have never been able to build flood gates outdoors....
No, I think the cook would be in charge of sugar-coating the cows.
You are a lifesaver! Round and probably in tropical flavors.
Mechanoid definitely has the right idea.
If you're building an outdoor channel that connects to the river, make the channel that connects to the river as long as possible and suspend/reactivate/suspend until the miner positions himself as far from the flow as possible. Then, with any luck he'll pathfind himself out of the way before he drowns.
You can always take your chances with the save/exit strategy too, but beware of corruption.
My favorite outdoor channel hookup strategy is:
1) Disable mining on Legendary miner.
2) Assign the channel to be built.
3) Wait for a death announcement of a novice miner to tell you when to reactivate mining on your Legendary miner.
But what do I know?
Everything I say should be taken with atleast 1 tsp. of salt, and another liter of Dwarven Wine is recommended.
"I thought it was the size of the others!" said Vanon. "I guess it was just standing further away!"
replace "channel" with "earth to be dug after the chasm is found" and you've summed up my solution to the "how do I mine past the chasm without losing my miner to the lava flood?" question.
If you make sure there's more work for the miner in question, he's got a good chance of moving away immediately to go work on that.
In my experience, at least.
Yeah, I don't think you can. Also you can't install retractable bridges outdoors, as far as I know? Has anyone done this? It would be cool to be able to build a drawbridge on the river...
Mech bridges are disabled outside the fortress.  I guess you can't build a drawbridge unless you've got a ceiling to hook pulleys to, or something.
