Do dwarf pets have to roam in order to give the dwarf the thought "comforted by a pet" or can the pet be locked in a cage in the zoo?  (I can't stand to see a dwarf going to his bedroom with 2 mules in tow...)

I tend to lock up all animals and only let a few out to be adopted - do they even need to be let out to be adopted, or just tagged as available?

Thanks.

The pet has to be reasonably close to its owner and outside of a cage to create the comforting thought.  I think they'll adopt animals in cages, once they are put up for adoption or sale.

I fiddled a bit more with the pets, and indeed, as long as they are marked as available, they will be adopted whether in the cage or not.

Its important to note that once adopted, the animal will be released from the cage an can't be put back in unless the owner dies (important if you don't like a lot of animals running amok).

How about some more smaller pets - dwarven goats, spider monkies, or somesuch?

Can't imagine a goat being smaller than a kitten. I tried allowing my dwarves to keep rats as pets, but they weren't eager to adopt.

Does something like a kitten or rat impede the progress of a Dwarf through a corridor as much as a fellow dwarf? I don't remember seeing anything about that in the raws unless it's just related to their size.

Kittens do.  Rats are 'small creatures' and do not, although I'm not sure about pet rats.

It should be noted that even if dwarves can't be 'comforted by pets' in cages, they can get a similar thought, 'comforted by a wonderful creature in a cage'.

Yeah, there's sort of an uncomfortable split between small and large creatures right now, and there aren't any hard rules about which creatures are which when I make them.  A cat is about the smallest "unit" sized creature, and the others are classed as "vermin events" and don't cause blockage.  Those are the ones that look like dots.

Can dwarves even adopt squirrels and other small animals as pets?  I've created several fortresses, caught these, and made them available yet no dwarf will ever get one even if they like the animal.

Some dwarves will adopt vermin. In my current fortress, one dwarf adopted four tame bats and another adopted two lizards. So, it happens. I would like to know if a vermin-pet for one dwarf will produce unhappy thoughts for another dwarf who dislikes that animal.

It won't bug the other dwarves unless it gets loose, which can happen when the dwarf sleeps.

I have a question related to pets, the thing is I captured a few small vermin type animals (toad, squirrels, roaches) and I've tried to get my animal tamer to train them, however every time I do so I get "[tamer's name] cancels tame small animal: Needs tameable small creature item". I've tried everything I can think of, I've left them in the original cages, moved them to new cages, moved them closer to the kennel, moved food closer to the kennel, and just about every possible thing I could think of but none of it has worked. I just recently captured some larger animals (deer and fox) and they apparently were tamed without any sort of error, so if someone would be so kind as to explain to me what I'm doing wrong it'd be greatly appreciated. Thanks ^_^
