About Barracks and Dining Rooms
« on: November 05, 2007, 08:39:00 pm »

First question:
When I've assigned a bed to be a barracks, do I have to assign each bed in that room to a soldier? Or do they sleep in the barracks even if they're assigned to another bed (and I've ordered them to sleep in the barracks in the squad menu)?

Second question:
I'm very confused about dining rooms! Is it enough if I just assign a table (with a chair) to be a dining room and make the room the size of the whole room that I've dug out and then just fill the room with more tables (and chairs)? And do I have to assign each and every table to a single dwarf? I.e, does every dwarf need their own table? Or is it enough if I just assign every table to be a dining room, without assigning them to dwarves?

And btw, I'm playing version 0.23.125.23a, the one before the introduction of the Z-axis.

You only need to assign one bed/table to make a barracks/dining room. All other furniture in the room is assumed to be a part of it and adds to the value. I don't know the answer to your question about soldiers.

Ok, the reason for my question about dining rooms was that my dwarves keep eating in my nobles' offices! And they still are. How do I make them eat in the large communal dining room instead of the offices?

And can somebody explain why I have a soldier sleeping on the floor when his assigned bed is 2 squares away in the same room?

You don't have to assign a bed to each soldier. They'll sleep in the barracks unless they have another bed assigned somewhere. You can always deassign the other bed if you want them to sleep in the barracks, although this may not work if they're married to a civilian, because they will automatically share any bed assigned to the civilian.

Make sure that you have your nobles dining room assigned to the noble in question, that should keep the other dwarves out.

I've figured out that they only eat in the offices (not the nobles' dining rooms btw) that aren't assigned to anyone. So I tried to just close the doors to those offices, and now they're eating in the large communal dining room.

I still however don't understand why they prefer a room with just a chair in it to a room assigned as a dining room full of tables with chairs!

Thanks for the answers though.

Dwarves like eating in solitude. That's why they are eating in offices...
