Gate?

Can some one please explain to me how to make a  gate that I can open and close with a lever? And I'm still very noob so you might need to make a diagram.

Sure, I'd be happy to help. First you'll need some materials: one door and three mechanisims. The door can be made either of wood, metal, or stone at the carpenter's, metalsmith's, or stoneworker's workshops, respectivly. The mechanisims are made of stone at the mechanic's workshop. It will also require at least one dwarf with the following professions enabled: furniture hauling and mechanics.

The next step is to place the gate and the lever. Build your gate using the door, and build a lever using one of the mechanisims. The keys to press for the door are: (b)uild, (d)oor, move the cursor to the place you want the door, then (enter). For the lever it's: (b)uild, (shift)+(t)raps, (l)ever, place the cursor, press (enter).

The final step is linking the lever to the door. Be warned that once you link the door up, it can only be opened and closed by pulling the lever. Select the newly built lever by pressing (q) and moving the cursor over it. Press (d) to select 'link with door' from the lever's menu. A list of available doors with appear from which to select the one to link to. The list is in order of when they were built, so just press the (numpad -) key to pop to the bottom of the list, if the door you want to link was the last one built. Once the door's selected, a list of available mechanisims will be shown; select two of them.

An available dwarf with the mechanics profession will pick up the linking job, eventually. And that's it, you now have a fully functional lever controlled gate. Enjoy.  :)

Can doors be picked if they are lever-closed?

I don't think so, but if you want to be 100% safe you can replace the door in the above text with a floodgate (created by your manson)

Both doors and floodgates can no longer be used manually by your dwarfs once hooked up to a lever (or similar) so they are functionally identical in this case.

Thank you  :D, one more question. What would be better for a fairly large fortress? Because I don't want 45 dwarfs just running over each other every time they enter and leave the fortress. I was thinking do what you said, and make it flood gates. And when ever a siege happens no one will be able to enter or leave the fortress. Is there another thing besides flood gates and doors to make a entrance?

I think I read on the wiki for the old version that doors can be picked, but you really want a drawbridge as your entrance gate.

I think this is my favourite typo in the history of typos.  I'm just imagining a mass murderer with a swastika tattooed on his forehead muttering darkly in the workshop.

The intruder arose, casting off its black cloak.  "Behold, stunted jesters!  It is I, Scuro!"  A jagged scar marked the goblin's face from eye to chin, his greasy mane gray and wild, and about his neck was the broken silver amulet, strapped together by a leather band.

I didn't know you could hook doors up to levers. Is that new in this version?

You build a drawbridge by building a bridge, then assigning it to raise in the direction you want with wasd. You can also make it retract. You can then connect it to a lever in the same manner as a door.

If you don't make it retract though, it serves as a wall when closed.  In other words, it can be like a door.
