How do I store things?

Mainly with crops. I wait awhile, and once they finally grow, everyone ignores them, and they rot. I've fiddled around with a few options, but couldn't find a way. How do I order my dwarves to carry the food from the field, and store it somewhere? And if I store it somewhere in the open, will it still rot? Should I build some kind of storage device for them to go in?

Press [p] for stockpiles, and then [f] for food stockpiles.  Place them the same way you make designations.

Food will not rot in food stockpiles. As for storage devices, barrels can be handy to keep a bunch of plants and stuff in one place. Dwarves will automatically use barrels to store things in stockpiles. It isn't necessary to have them in a room or anything, even food sitting outside in the rain will be perfectly fine as long as it's in a food stockpile (presumably it's protected somehow).

Dwarves and animals walking over it will damage it though, so don't put food in your hallways. The wiki has more info: http://www.dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/Stockpile

Once you have enough dwarves that you can afford to let a few be idle sometimes, I recommend making a couple of dedicated food haulers - just turn off everything but that one job and it'll make sure stuff gets to your stockpile much faster. I even do this with retired legendaries sometimes since they're so agile.
