The proper surface to work on?

I have a carpenter in a fell mood and he is asking for...

*Wood (have plenty)
*Rough Gems (have some)
*bones (have plenty)
*the proper surface to work on (???)

What surface does he want?  Any ideas before he goes crazy?

I believe that means he needs a stone block.  The block will actually be used up if successful, but will not be part of the creation.
