Is this supposed to happen? 3 Baronesses!
« on: August 27, 2014, 06:22:04 pm »

So here's the sitch:

I just started playing DF again after about 2 years, so I may be behind the times on how things work. But my fort is at 113 dwarves now; I have not yet been offerred being a barony I think because I was at like 70 last time the Liason came around.

All of a sudden I get three notices along the lines of:

Urist McDwarfess as the rightful heir becomes a baroness of the Gravel of Kindness (my civ).
Rovod McSmith as the rightful heir becomes a baroness of the Gravel of Kindness (my civ).
Danat McBeal as the rightful heir becomes a baroness of the Gravel of Kindness (my civ).

I check my nobles list and indeed, I now have 3 baronesses, despite the liason never making me a barony, and they all want their own quarters and what not.

On top of that, none of them are related to one another.

No one died in my fortress to trigger this.

So... is this normal now, or is this buggy and I should report it and whatnot?

Likely what happened was that one of your parent civ's fortresses was conquered and there happened to be three or more barons present. The barons were then executed by the invading force resulting in their heirs (your dwarves) inheriting their titles.

I'm pretty sure that's it too.  There's another thread asking about this in the gameplay forum that I posted something similar.  I've had this happen playing "dead" civilizations, so my guess is they're heirs or displaced nobles seeking refuge in your fort.  It makes me wonder now though if you reclaim the ruin/fort they become barons/royalty of if they'll leave your main fort to re-establish themselves.

As the others said, it's from them inheriting it from barons in other forts that died. Next time your liaison shows up, he'll probably have a nice big list of of forts that were conquered since he was last there. For more fun, since you haven't been made a barony, he'll still make you a barony and have you select a dwarf for the position. If it's anything like my game, you won't be able to select the three that are already baronesses, so you'll end up with four of them (I only had two though). As the final topper, when he comes back later on to upgrade you to county or duchy, all four of them will get upgraded. At least this is how it happened in my game in 40.08. Better get started on all that fancy furniture they'll want (or a magma chamber. go for the magma chamber).
