Why don't my farmers just plant the whole field full?
« on: August 23, 2014, 11:29:05 am »

Food shortage. In the winter. There's no plants, no alcohol, no water, and no food whatsoever, and that's all because of my FREAKING LAZY farmers. I had them build 4 5x5 farm plots, all of which growing different things for each season, and ever since they were made, the plots collectively had 16 plants at most(4 for each plot) growing, instead of using the full 5x5 space on each plot. I planned this out; it would theoretically grow 100 plants at a time after about a year of producing seeds through brewing. But NOOO... they had to plant 4 plump helmets, and then go party.

Why don't the dwarves just plant the whole thing full?

Where exactly are your farm plots located? Do any of them have a mixture of "Light" and "Dark" tiles? How many seeds do you have?

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Try disabling other labors of your farmer dwarves to make them more efficient. Are you sure that you have all the the necessary seeds?

A single 3x3 field, a nearby seed storage, AND a skilled farmer is usually enough for my booze / food production, it can feed around 100 dwarves, you don't really need many farmers and huge fields.

I prefer to use as few farmers as possible, because skilled farmers create bigger stacks of plants. Anyone can gather them, it's just the planting that requires high farming skill for high yield. Bigger stacks are just way better. A stack of 5 plump helmets requires 5 times less brewing jobs to create the same amount of booze than 5 stacks of 1 helmet.

There appear to be 5 light tiles, which are probably under trees. But the vast majority of the tiles are dark. I have around 30 seeds for each plant, and they are located on Z0, about 5 Z levels away from the kitchen, where my seeds are. I'm going to move the seeds to the same room as the farms, I was going to do that anyway.

Oh. Well, that'll save me a lot of work in the future XD

If you have a subterranean farm plot with ANY "light" tiles, then you must move it somewhere else which is 100% dark - your dwarves will start planting at the upper-left corner and plant in columns toward the right, but the instant they reach a tile with improper light/dark status they will stop planting and never touch the rest of the farm plot.

Which yet again proves rule number one of this game: Dwarves are stupid.

Anyway, that should solve the problem. Thanks, I will try that.

This is especially annoying because the tile directly underneath a tree is marked as Light and Above Ground. So on a heavily forested map, there are few spots just below the surface for a decent-sized plot.

You could also irrigate deeper levels, but it takes ages to prepare and carry out, and it's too much work to do at the beginning(usually). Usually when I start a new fort and one underground floor has soil or clay, I just dig out a room and use that. But with heavily forested areas, it's indeed a hassle do find a good spot without irrigating.

If I have at least 2 soil layer (which is pretty common), I build my farms in the second layer, so they don't have to worry about tree roots.
