Help! I need to stem a torrent of water!
« on: May 07, 2008, 12:09:00 pm »

Okay, here's the problem. For reasons of my own, I have engineered a situation wherein water will flood from a river, through floodgates (when opened), through gates and a stairwell, into a room below. I provided for the room's drainage with a long tunnel to the other side of the plateau we're living in, but...

When I made the linkage to the river, I put the floodgate in the corner. I forgot that water spreads in all eight directions! Now I can't stem the flow. I need to get a floodgate or something in one of those tiles so I can shut off the water to reset the trap! But how can I build a floodgate in a tile that's full of water? Is there anything I can do, or do I have to revert to an older save? (And please, no guff about savescumming. I shamelessly cheat; losing is not fun for me.)

re-wall instead.

I tried, but it just says "WATER" in red if I try to wall in the water.

Well, it all depends on the layout of the surrounding area (and the nature of the leak), and how fast you need to stop the flow.

Post pictures showing the levels above and below the leak, as well as the leak itself.  There's a slightly cheaty-er way of fixing this, but it's more satisfying to engineer some convoluted method of water removal instead.

You can set up a pump above the flow; it'll suck water up from one of the squares below, and you should be able to install a floodgate/build a wall. It may take a few tries (the dwarves will cancel the task if water gets higher than 1/7, but you can just re-start it), but it should work even if you're just dumping the pumped water right back into the flow.

If there's rock above, you could collapse into water's path to put an end to it.
