World Generation Option: North or South Pole?
« on: July 16, 2014, 05:14:38 pm »

I think the thread title makes anything I say after it no more than repetition, but to be clear;

There should be an option in 'Design a World with Advanced Parameters' to select between north, south, or random poles when determining which direction is hotter and which direction is colder. Should players want their worlds representing northern or southern hemispheres, this would spare them from manually rejecting polarities they dislike.

I recognize this is something of a low priority for most people, but if it is also low-hanging fruit, perhaps it could be added in due time.

I've wanted this forever. I would also like to see an option for 'no pole' so I can have complete control over the temperature map.

Can we pick Middle Pole?

So that there's an epic frozen mountain in the centre where we slam our fortress so that we can lose adventurers to the frozen wastes? :D

Discworld, anyone? It would actually be rather interesting to see only the northern or southern hemisphere, but the entire hemisphere represented, with blazing deserts and tropical seas bordering the map. And of course, you could actually circumnavigate the globe by walking along the border. In some ways this would be a more accurate representation of a world than we currently have, even if cardinal directions became irrelevant.

If we were to get control over the poles, it could allow for some advanced potentials if it allows enough customization, like chosing number of poles in order to have an equator, chose whether the poles are hot or cold, define the min/max temperatures(to be able to prevent certain temperature levels), and chose to have the temperature change in more than one axis. Like creating a map with a warm center that gradualy grows colder in all directions.

This would be a good idea and in combination with it the implementation of connecting the sides of the map, i.e. walking off the side of the map on the west and appearing in the far east.

This would be important for when boats and boat fast-travel are finally implemented. Of course this could potentially mean that the map projection would have to change or have a viewing option that would for example display it in one of the modern methods used for 2-d representation of a globe like Mercator and others.

This could greatly enhance the games fun though especially if there ever arrives a time when huge parts of the world are unexplored and you and your boat crew explore it and discover new continents and lost civilizations like Columbus and Magellan, being able to traverse off the map to the corresponding location on the other side would be essential to this.

It occurs to me we need to be careful not to break quest dialogue; unless all points on the map share the same 'true' north, far more advanced code will be needed to calculate the offset from north. 'Up' may well be 'South' in actuality, but our current dialogue would describe it as 'North'. Furthermore a compass would be needed to determine directions for long-range navigation, since you would eventually encounter map distortion.

Simply reining it in to north-south poles avoids this.
