So I left a fortress running on its own for a while, came back, looked at the announcements logs, and saw:

"Urist McDwarf, king has mandated..."

And I thought "wait, what?"  Of course, one of my dwarfs had been promoted to king because the previous king had  been killed and my fortress was the only bastion of dwarfkind left.  But it should have told me as soon as the promotion happened, so I could get started on making offices and such.

It only makes sense that if Urist knows he's now the king, the overseer should be informed as well.  If you're playing a dead civ, it should be announced immediately upon arriving at the embark site.

A nice touch would be not finding out about  succession until the Liaison arrives.

"What news of the Mountainhome?"
"Well, let's see. A few weeks ago, a cat got stuck in a tree.  And an elven diplomat had an unfortunate accident involving a magma cannon.  And some goblins attacked an outpost.  And goblins attacked another outpost.  And the king died leaving your cheesemaker in charge.  And the guards at an outpost killed some goblins in the wilderness.  I think that's about it."
"Wait, what was that fifth one again?"

I like the idea of finding out from the liaison but it seems like maybe if this happens the liaison should come early to tell you. ie showing up as soon as travel permits, not with the caravan
