What moves the cat is using? Maybe they can be quite effective and can substitute the dwarves, bonus points if you somehow assign them helms and breastplates.

I have noticed this once as well, with a war dog (assigned to a soldier). What might be happening is that they dodge a sparring dwarf that dodges/stumbles onto it's tile.

Soap!! Soap is undwarflike!! only those pansy elves and too tall humans use soap, dwarves only use alcohol, and the blood of those foolish enough to attack them to bathe, if they bother to bathe at all

Soap!! Soap is undwarflike!!
You don't seem to understand  where soap comes from. Soap is produced from fat, which is produced from corpses such as forgotten beast corpses or severed goblin limbs. Killing diseases by rubbing yourself with bits of megabeast corpse is about as dorfy as it gets.

Plus it's made by cutting down and burning wood, which the elves don't like.

Seriously...

Dwarves do need proper baths occasionally, as Elvish blood causes the beard to matte.

It's a given that the engravers don't wash their beards, as there is no other way for a handless dwarf to chisel, than with a rock-stiff beard.

That said, soap is not necessary to keep the beards from becoming more stiff than steel wool.

As dorfy as it is to coat their bodies with the (desecrated) remains of mutilated creatures and trees processed into soapy form the dwarves don't really need it.

It is a well known fact that the dorfs don't like water but a less know fact is that their bodies have a small uropygial gland that secretes a kind of natural beard wax which they regularly use for grooming their beards. This provides a water-repelling waxy coating on their beards, making them partially immune to the effects of that foul liquid that fills the streams  above ground. When in the need of cleaning their beards are more adapted to periodic soaking with an organic solvents such as sewer brew since water has little to no effect on their hydrophobic beards.

The weredwarf Urist McUrist has come! A bearded drunkard twisted into minute form. It is crazed for booze and socks. Its unwashed beard is tangled. It needs alcohol to get through the working day and has gone without a drink for far too long. Now you will know why you fear the mines.

Et tu, Urist
