How do I check which towers, civilizations etc are near my fortress?

Didn't check this when I chose an embark site, as I didn't really know how.

How far will goblins/necromancers etc travel to attack a fortress?

How far will humans/elves send traders and liaisons?

On the embark screen press the tabulator key. This toggles through different informations on one of the info screen you will see your neighbors.
After embark I have no idea how to find out.

Bump, is there any way at all I can check to see who my neighbors are after I've already embarked?

Pressing C will show you nearby civilizations. These will change over time, I think. You might even get guests (or invaders) that you didn't expect.

So C shows your neighboring civs in game, is there any way to see all the civilizations that exist in your world in game (after embark)?

make a copy of your save, retire the fortress in that copy, check legends, profit.

Thank you kindly sir, can you tell me how exactly I'd go about doing this? I'm fairly new to DF, and not that pc savvy in general.

Go to the folder in which DF is located (the one you open in order to run the game) > data > Copy the save folder and paste it somewhere else, like your desktop > Launch the game, retire the fortress, and you can now select "Legends" for that region.

To get back to playing around with your fortress in that region, move the save folder you previously copied back into the data folder, overwriting the Legends save.

Or you could just copy the save file and give it a different name. Much easier.
