I've decided to try to pierce an aquifer for the first time.

Help would be appreciated, as the wiki didn't make sense to me.

Have you checked out the article about the double slit method?

If so: what exactly doesn't make sense to you?

Idea # 1: If the right kind of rocks are in your aquifer layer you can mine through them as normal.  But this type of thing can't really be found on every map.

Idea # 2: Use the plug method on the wiki.  It takes up lots of space, but is easier to deal with than the pump method.

I must have had the right rocks, I got deep down, no need to pierce

dang to, because I can't find an aquifer anywhere on my map. I guess I'll just start playing

"Ghost aquifers" (that is, the game telling you there are aquifers at embark when there really aren't) are a known bug. Sorry for the lack of FUN.

You can sometimes get a soil layer that is porous (conglomerate or something) with inclusions of something nonporous(microcline comes to mind...) and these form 'holes' in the aquifer.

I personally love aquifers. Breaking through them is a challenge and I always screw it up at least once, but once you do it it's much easier to do a second time. They provide underground power, water for the sick, and endless water sink/sources for waterfalls, drowning traps, and other assorted fun toys.

welp, found the aquifer.

My dorfs dug damp stone that I thought was from the river above, but nope, an aquifer layer that ended at the biome.

Flooded. I had the save on a USB drive though, so I just quit, and undesignated the area. I like this fort area, and I don't want to restart :D
