Do liquids still drain off the map edge?
« on: August 06, 2014, 05:28:38 am »

It's been a while, so just checking. I found a rather nice volcano and want to live in it, so I'm digging a tunnel from the base of the mountain to the map edge. Ideally I'd like it to drain away, but I wouldn't complain if it flooded the bottom layers in the process. Like some kind of lava mountain moat. :D

AFAIK liquid behavior hasn't changed in version .40, have fun with it!

Are you the same Moogie who ran those websites on the Shining Force series, by chance?

'Fraid not, and that's not the first time someone's asked me that question, oddly enough. Must have been a good site. :)

Just keep in mind that because the way volcanoes work in DF they keep constantly refilling until the magma level reaches a particular z-level. Because of that you will have hard time building inside it since you will have to keep constantly draining which can slow down the game on older cpus and it will slowly fill up again after you are finished unless you block it entirely so you have to be careful. I suppose that a clever use of magma-safe bridges and perhaps pumps can make it easier and you may want to breach the magmatube in such a way that you can seal the leak later.

Strange. I just presumed that you were a ferengi.

They do, at least in 40.01.

Not the first time I've heard that, either... :P

Good point about the FPS. My fresh new fort is already down to 75FPS for some reason. Was at a solid 100FPS the previous season, no idea why it dropped, there's no river here and I haven't done anything to the volcano yet.

Anyway, I plan to drain it from about 20 Zs below the mouth. I want it to drain quickly, so I'll use a series of tunnels connected to a several-tile-wide pipe to the map edge. Each of those tunnels will have its own switchable floodgate, and I'll knock through to the magma one by one. I'll use a fast-moving miner so hopefully he'll get out of the way in time (I can't think of any other way to do this now that magma pipes don't have random shapes between Z-levels).

Once all the walls are knocked through and the miner is home, I'll release all the floodgates at once and let it drain.

How quickly will it refill? Do you think I'll have time to floor over it? Will floors even stop it refilling? Will they need to be magma-safe floors?

You could always use the bridge method.. but it's a little cheaty since it abuses the fact that you can mine tiles that are blocked by a bridge. I know this is a bad text image but..

Lmbw_____
Lwr_______

L is the magma, m in the spot you want to mine out, b is a wood bridge, w is a wall and r is a ramp.

After you channel out the area in front of the tube wall, build a wooden bridge over the hole, then seal off access to the area. Now designate the wall to be mined out. Your miner will stand on the ramp and mine the wall on the level above 'through' the bridge, but the bridge will hold back the magma for a few seconds, giving the miner time to mine out a few wall squares and get away before the bridge burns through. Just don't try to hit more than 2-3 squares unless you are using multiple miners or the bridge will let go before you're ready.
