Upright Spears - "Needs Item"

What exactly does this error message mean? I've got 40 training spears to create my highway to the danger zone, but it won't let me place an Upright Spear trap because it "needs item", and the only reference I've been able to find is an unanswered bug tracker post from July.

I observed that too both when building spear traps and weapon traps, trying a few days later usually resolved it. Not sure what the cause is. I think it is a bug of sorts.

Were the spears in a weapon bin?

Was the weapon bin being carried?

You have no spears available until that bin is set down.
