Pickaxe material for combat use
« on: August 02, 2014, 09:58:02 am »

Right now I'm training up some dwarves in preparation for military service.
They just finished their iron pumping sessions and are now legendary pump operators.
Up next, I'm having them dig until they are legendary miners.

After that, I'm going to deactivate their mining job, draft them and let them spar / individual training session, using pickaxes as specifically designated weapons, just because I think dwarves wielding pickaxes into battle are dwarfy.

Now if I remember correctly, using a pickaxe in combat uses mining skill, not sure if it trains it as well when sparring.

What would be better for a combat pickaxe? Steel, or copper (for the added weight)?

picks are edged weapons, so definitely steel as it is much sharper and allows you to penetrate armour more easily.

added weight greatly affects blunt weapons, like warhammers, maces or whips. for those, copper is marginally better than steel as it is denser. usually copper comes from tetrahedrite, which when smelted yields silver. silver is even denser than copper and therefore better for blunt weapons

It does, though dwarves won't properly spar with their weapons in the latest version, unfortunately.
