Fortress Mode with one character?
« on: January 31, 2015, 11:25:38 pm »

What are some options to play fortress mode, but with only one character? Anything other than Masterwork (Hermit)?

You could atom-smash the other six dwarves. That's the most simple solution coming to my mind.

It is quite boring actually.
Especially when your dorf is on break.

Hmm. Maybe I'll come up with something better than the Dark Wizard mod.

I've done a hermit game in vanilla 34.11 and played it out for a few decades.

Here are the issues and some ways to overcome them:

  • Migrant waves:
    • Murder and lay them all to rest
    • Prevent migration events using a dfhack script each eligible season
    • Steal however the Masterwork Hermit race prevents migrations
  • Dying of old age
    • Set MAXAGE for dwarves really high immediately prior to embark
    • using dfhack, in lua, set the units old age year far into the future
  • It's boring because nobody attacks
    • Set ATTACK_TRIGGER:1 for megabeasts
    • Set the appropriate PROGRESS_TRIGGER POPULATION:0 for entities
    • Set the titan attack population to 1 during world gen
  • Breaks are crippling
    • I think Putnam wrote a script to interrupt breaks
    • Steal however Masterwork Hermit Race mods to prevent this

It's totally doable in vanilla, and I think that'd be my preferred option. I suppose this would be pretty easy to put into a standalone mod, especially since Masterwork has done a lot of the hard work anyway.

In the data/init folder, set STRICT_POPULATION_CAP:1
I think you'll still get the seven beginner dwarfs, but you should get no migrations and no births. You can also remove the "active season: autumn" from the "mountain" civilisation in data/save/(your world)/raw/entity_default.txt. This also removes caravans from the equation. That can be done in an existing world, no need to re-generate, just save&exit and restart the game after making the changes.

Vanilla with a single dwarf is either pretty boring or pretty short, though.

It can be not boring! You just have to either play at an insanely low level of risk-tolerance or save scum. The times when you have no choice but to expose him to risk (opening caverns, opening trap sections to the outside) are pretty exciting, and the other times at least go fast because FPS stays high.

The one little guy in the Hermits series managed a small minecart water autocannon, captured a web-flinging mountain titan and made socks out of titan silk.

Getting rid of/reducing breaks would be a must, though. I'd check out however Masterwork does that. Oh, and also remove skill rust, because otherwise you'd be spending all your time micromanaging rust prevention.

It's been done before and can be challenging, a hermit fort is apparently how the name Urist became so popular:

It would be challenging since your one dwarf would have to be protected with great care, so almost all of your defenses would have to be automated which would take a lot of prep time.

Why not set the population caps to 1? Then you won't get migrants.

Can you turn caravans on again after you deactivated them?
