Dwarves in a cage
« on: July 27, 2014, 05:16:22 pm »

So, I've been playing my first 0.40.04 fortress, I have a decent one going, with some good industry. I was cutting down some trees when I see the message:

Confused, I check one of my cage traps.

What.

I wonder if I can sell him to the merchants...

That's interesting. I normally only capture dwarves accompanying caravans...

If you want to free him, build his cage, assign it to a lever and then pull the lever.

I dont know, I've always wanted a dwarf in a cage. I'm thinking about putting him on display in my monarch's room.

Obviously you must train him to become a war dwarf :)

Just a heads-up that the dwarf may starve/perish of thirst, since receiving care from other dwarves is unlikely. My understanding is that only caged prisoners (via justice system) are likely to receive food/drink from other dwarves, and unreliably, to boot. Building the cage and un-assigning the dwarf will not work. Building the cage, building a lever, linking the lever, pulling the lever - that will work.

This can happen to dwarves who are very sleepy/clumsy/injured/webbed/otherwise not moving properly when they wander over a cage trap. I've had it happen pretty regularly. Makes sense.

I wonder if you can fix this by building the cage, marking it used for justice, convicting the dwarf of a crime and waiting his sentence out.
