We NEED the "remove of the party" option.
« on: July 25, 2014, 01:15:50 pm »

Isn't annoying when you think that it would VERY useful to remove someone from your party? When you recruit a peasant just to see the way he fights, and then you regret deeply when he gets slain by cavy boars. And what about your one-limbed companion that got badly injured by fighting gobbos? It's just damn-annoying having a dumbass retarded fistfighting peasant and two limbless soldiers when you could just recruit new soldiers, but you CAN'T.

I'm not quite sure I understand, since you mentioned somebody being dead, but if you can talk to them, "bring up the journey together" or whatever, you should get an option to cancel the agreement when you continue the conversation.

What if they can no longer talk? >.>

I was thinking more along the lines of this legendary champion, all clad in dented and dinged up steel plate, his blood-drenched axe slung over his back, a notch in the handle for every enemy that saw the swing of that blade as the last sight they ever saw, a battered shield strapped over his arm... and a fluffy, pink stuffed hippo hidden discretely in his breastplate.

Tell the others to stay behind, lead them into an empty building, and go Time before Time on them.

Regardless of whether the option already exists as per Toady's post, various other people saying "Oh, no big deal, just go heinously murder your comrades" is not exactly an appropriate response to a request for a "dismiss party member" UI feature.

Dwarf fortress in 50 words: You start with seven alcoholic, manic-depressive dwarves. You build a fortress in the wilderness where EVERYTHING tries to kill you, including your own dwarves. Usually, your chief imports are immigrants, beer, and optimism. Your chief exports are misery, limestone violins, forest fires, elf tallow soap, and carved kitten bone.

It looks like you can dismiss party members, and the edge case is someone who is comatose or otherwise unable to enter a conversation.  Not sure how much development effort that edge case is worth, but ideally you should be able to leave the companion in someone's care at a place you could have retired the adventurer.  (Then he wakes up after eight months and tries to rejoin your party...)
