AFAIK, real trees float on water and tend to stay in one piece when chopped down.
The latter is the key part. If trees yielded a trunk rather than logs, you could pull the part of the trunk that fell into the water out of it before chopping the trunk into logs.
Which I reckon we'll see happen sooner or later.
Seems pretty difficult to properly implement for something that can just be abstracted by where the logs end up.

What happens if the trunk falls on uneven terrain? Do we consider collisions between the start and end points? How do dwarves 'pull' a trunk? What does DF gain from the development time?

Well, it might be overkill if that was the sole thing it ever got used for.
But it does open up possibilities like "drop trees on your enemies"-traps, too. So I dunno.

Yeah, the best would be for them to float right now. Eventually, they will probably fall down in one big piece that you have to chop up.

Another alternative improvement would be to make dwarfs more willing to swim.

I know that eventually we should get logs that float, Toady mentioned in a few future of the fortress posts about having boats, I would assume that whatever gets coded to allow buoyancy would also cause items to be checked if they could float, then we might get items floating around in the water and even magma... also more lag (yay lag)..

They're nearly as bad as badgers. Build a couple of anti-buzzard SAM sites marksdwarf towers and your fortress will look like Baghdad in 2003 from all the aerial bolt spam. You waste a lot of ammo and everything is covered in unslightly exploded buzzard bits and broken bolts.

Streaming rivers should exert a little bit of force in whatever direction, and depending on the item, should slowly push it along or not at all.
Wood, light, 'floats', and is pushed along rather quickly.
Gold bar, heavy, sits at the bottom and is never moved.
metal Barrel of booze, sits near the bottom/floats halfway between bottom and surface, and is pushed more slowly.

This would mean that a certain number of items is carried off, like wood, and instead of being annoyed about your wood being irretrievable, it is removed by nature.
In case of a pond, the wood should just end up on the ground sooner or later. 'pushed onto the ground by the wind.' And since we can't have squares that are like half ground, half water, this will have to do.

Wood magically not falling into water, nah.
