Worms keep puttering around in my food stockpile, despite it being solid obsidian and everything barreled up. Could they be coming from the roof? It might be loam, but I was under the impression the game didn't notice such things.

Vermins appear and disappear randomly and doesn't follow any normal pathing rules. So it's completely normal to have worms in room made from pure obsidian. Food should be safe from the vermins as long as those are stored in barrels.

You know, they could teach maths like this at school. "There are 105 dwarves in a settlement. A goblin invasion appears and 67 die. Then a migrant wave..."

I thought they only came from soil and clay. They never show up in my forges or anything.

Yup! That was it. I was storing my ducks and peahens in there from a goblin raid, and I just left them there.

This is kind of a bug, I should think. In real life, ducks and peacocks will eat practically every bug in your outdoor garden if you let them wander around, I can't imagine they could spawn more pests in a stone cave.

They will be covered in lice in real life.
