It should keep the vein if the z level below is that vein.
This, when you build a wall you build both:
* a wall-tile in the current z-level and
* a floor-tile on the z-level above,
over:
* the floor-tile in the current z-level that should be the same material as
* the wall-tile in the z-level below

If you dig a wall-tile, you should be seeing the floor-tile that goes with the wall-tile 1 z-level down... so if you cast 1-z of obsidian over a clay floor and then dig the obsidian, you should be left with the clay floor, some obsidian stones and an obsidian floor in the z-above

I'm just wondering if anyone has confirmed this (3d veins) is not the case?

In a fat-fingered moment while setting up another military squad I accidentally created a captain of the guard rather than a militia captain.  His squad of near-legendary hammerdwarves equipped with high quality silver hammers then took it upon themselves to dispense justice to all the mandate breakers in the fortress.  It was quite messy.

This might have been a bugfix for all the weird "mining through SMR" etc. shenanigans.

Even if intentional, though, this is annoying, since you can't engrave constructed floors, thus you're stuck with either solid blocks of color for your engraved floor patterns, or unengraved floors. Though I guess not particularly MORE annoying than before, I guess.

So perhaps that's actually just a separate but related issue that constructed things should be engraveable...

Dwarf fortress in 50 words: You start with seven alcoholic, manic-depressive dwarves. You build a fortress in the wilderness where EVERYTHING tries to kill you, including your own dwarves. Usually, your chief imports are immigrants, beer, and optimism. Your chief exports are misery, limestone violins, forest fires, elf tallow soap, and carved kitten bone.

Something like engrave slabs, but for blocks of material. Now, there's a four step building industry. Mine rock, Make Block, Engrave Block, Build. For the true OCD, you can even make matching patterns.

Ustxu Iceraped the Frigid Crystal of Slaughter was a glacier titan. It was the only one of its kind. A gigantic feathered carp composed of crystal glass. It has five mouths full of treacherous teeth, enormous clear wings, and ferocious blue eyes. Beware its icy breath! Ustxu was associated with oceans, glaciers, boats, and murder.

This makes sense.

They're nearly as bad as badgers. Build a couple of anti-buzzard SAM sites marksdwarf towers and your fortress will look like Baghdad in 2003 from all the aerial bolt spam. You waste a lot of ammo and everything is covered in unslightly exploded buzzard bits and broken bolts.
