Please forgive stupid question: did you build cages or cage traps?  A cage trap needs a mechanic and mechanisms as well as a cage and is ordered from the trap submenu of the build menu.

Well now I feel stupid... I should of realized that it would have been as something as simple as making sure that the cage was a trap cage... and I was doing so well on that fort.

Oh well, time to make another fort right next to it and adjust some things so I can have a working military earlier. Like instead of having the dorfs move random stuff back and forth between two stockpiles for no reason(because I had no idea what to do with them at the time =P dorf managment is still something I have yet to get used to, and I can see why people do silly mega projects), I could use them to quickly set up the metal industry and punch out enough bars to start a small basic squad.

The game is complicated. Lots of opportunities for things to not work out the first time. All part of the !FUN! ;-)

Metal industry is something i aim for as soon as basic security in place. Bonus points for making it magma driven

Usually I start with a squad of 5 or 6 on my second or third migrant wave, when there are enough specialists that the soldiers would otherwise be purely haulers. On 0.40 it might be worth starting earlier because I've had sieges as early as the start of summer.
