Dwarves and Their Traps
« on: July 18, 2014, 02:08:57 pm »

Hello everyone. Just stared playing Dwarf Fortress about 4 months ago, and I'm having a fantastic time. After a few failed forts in Version 34, I managed to get a fairly mature 30 year fort going.

After waiting a while, I decided to download the new 40.03 version and got a decent 3 year fort running. Loving all the new stuff, and I found this version actually ran a little quicker even with some of the dwarves climbing up trees to get to things.

In any case, my broker drowned one fine spring day while attempting to retrieve a merchant that had dehydrated in a tree. I wasn't overly concerned, and I quickly replaced him with another who had an appraisal skill. A human caravan arrived shortly afterwards so I had Urist McBroker stop his wood burning and go trade with them at the Depot. Things went well and he left after the trade was completed to return to the fort. Then, bam, he's suddenly caged. I look and he's set off one of our cage traps at the entrance, and I simply thought, hey they can accidentally set off their own traps now, that's actually kind of neat, maybe there's a 0.01% chance of stumbling into one. So, my mechanic dutifully retrieves the cage and stores it in the animal stockpile. I had tried assigning the poor prisoner to another cage or a pit with no success, as he didn't display in the list of creatures to put into any of these. I was in the middle of setting up a chain for him to go to when I experienced my first crash. No biggie, as I'll just go back to my most recent save, but just wanted to share in case anyone else has experienced this. Cheers!

I think in order to get dwarves out of cages you need to build the cage they're in, then link it to a lever and pop it open that way.

Good luck with the uncoordinated little guy.

Dwarves will be caged if they fall asleep or unconscious on a cage trap, or if a spider spins a web on the trap and they step in it.

Sounds like your little guy was tuckered out  :)

I think this is a new crash bug. You should report it since bugs that cause crashes are Toady's highest priority right now.

Hmm, I had a dwarf crippled by a weapons trap in 40.03 yesterday. Now I'm curious.

I had heard of that, and thought about it, but I'm skeptical in this case because it was the first trap in a row of about 40.  I suppose it could just be the odds, but it made my eyes narrow dubiously.

As far as i can tell, dwarfs won't actually go to sleep on an unsafe square. I didn't take it to the brink of madness, but my militia commander, locked into a four-tile room containing nothing but cage traps didn't sleep until released after about a month. Although, yes, there are the weird reported cases of dwarfs apparently sleepwalking. That's not simply walking around with the "sleep" job (dwarfs will already show this job while on their way to a bed), but rather walking around while blinking with the "asleep" Z and displaying "unconscious" status.

The usual cases for dwarfs falling into their own traps are unconsciousness (giving in to pain, resting when wounded) and stunning (when dropping down from above).

In order to get a captured dwarf released, you have to build the cage as a piece of furniture (b-j); e'x'pand the view to get the proper "dwarf cage" shown. After you build the cage, the dwarf can be released just by un"a"ssigning them from the cage, or by connecting a lever to the cage and pulling it, if you want to make it more complicated.

I think the trap issue was caused by the sleepwalking bug. The dwarf falls asleep but keeps walking, over a trap. Creatures will activate traps if they're unconscious (ie. asleep), so boom. Sleep walks into a cage trap.

Sleepwalking could actually be an interesting feature if managed properly. I'd love to see dwarves with that trait sleepwalk into weapon traps and die. Although it'd make the learning curve[<-Colloquial usage] steeper, I think it could be fun.
