Divide Known and Unknown Creature Sounds
« on: August 17, 2014, 10:10:22 am »

While only two creatures currently make sound (capybara and kakapo) this will no doubt be expanded in future. As things stand if you hear a creature you can't see you get messages like: "You hear a loud bark." with little indication of what made the sound.

The problem is that much of the time it's possible to identify animals by sound at range even between those that all "bark" or "sing", but it's not always desirable to know what animal made a sound; You should only be able to recognise familiar animal sounds and not being able to recognise the source can add tension (weird roaring in the caverns / jungle).

For each historical figure a list of known creatures should be easy to generate as needed from a combination of: the creatures found in their civs lands, domesticated creatures, and creatures met on adventures / wars / similar. If the creature heard is on the list it should say "You hear a loud capybara bark.". It could even randomly sometimes not be accurate the first few times you hear the sound (not unrealistic and can create tension).

Having followers in adventure mode panic a bit in response to some unknown noises would be immersive. If the player could ask or be asked about the source of unknown sounds it would be a bonus.

*You hear an Ogre grumble*
Axeman Companion: Did you hear that!?

a> Change the subject...
b> Don't worry, its harmless.
c> Its behind you!
d> That is an Ogre grumble.
e> I don't know.

Might make for an interesting distraction or assistance option in combat too.

I hate to be this guy but...

f> It was inevitable

That said, I like this idea. Also opens opportunities for people to have a paragraph in their sheet that says "His voice is deep and grumbly/Her voice is high pitch and squealing. He likes the call of mountain titans for their comforting mewls."

"He is happy because he recently heard a titan's mewl"

Also, parrots should emit a random sound from an animal in their region.

Get one as a pet and wander at night to train it to cackle.
Then use it to help scare bandits at dusk before you attack :)
