General Question About Releasing Mods
« on: July 20, 2014, 05:56:34 pm »

I was wondering, is it acceptable on these forums to have your download link go through adfly? Just wondering, because I might be releasing a mod, and there are also a lot of other mods out there that really deserve at LEAST the tiny bit of money they could get from adfly(*cough* Masterwork *cough*). If I ever did have it go through adfly I would also have a direct link for anyone that has something against it. Iknow this isn't really directly a modding question, but it relates to it so I figured it'd go here.

Adfly has been known to distribute malware through ad links.

But usually it's really easy to tell on adfly what's ad and what's not, so you just don't click the ad. It may have changed since I last used it though.

It has been suggested to me on several times, but I'd rather not use it.

It has a crapload of ads that are made up entirely of big "download!" buttons.

I guess it's more just through practice that I've learned to ignore those. Maybe with a warning right before the download link that hitting anything on the adfly page besides the skip ad in the top right corner will almost guarantee malware?

Its polarizing, I used to use it on my Minecraft mods but stopped, for one unless you're in the tens of millions of downloads monthly it doesn't pay out more than a couple bucks a month. My mods were split modules, running in the millions a month and at BEST it was $12 a month for me through adfly.

I just wouldn't recommend it these days.

Yeah, probably the best you can go for is, say, a donation link... which you may notice Masterwork already has.

Or a Patreon or something, though that brings up the obvious issue of how such a thing can be made without abuse. Obviously Patreon has that "max amount per month" thing just in case someone you're supporting decides to abuse it, but it'd be a good idea to come up with something unabusable regardless.

Now I want to think about this even though I'm probably not gonna patreon...
