Next stable build?
« on: July 17, 2014, 01:55:24 pm »

I am a player from long ago returning after hearing about the new release. It would be good to play this game again this time with new goodies. I would however like to play a relatively bug free game- a stable build. I can understand a few small bugs such as carp eating fisherdwarves a bit too often, but I would like to avoid game breakers or ones that impact gameplay too much.

So I have a question- when do you think we might have such a mostly stable build? Would it be playable within a few weeks or is this something I would need to wait months for? I am just looking for a ballpark estimate to know how often I should check this site for updates.

Thanks,

Toady said that he fixed most crashes already and that from now on you should be able to keep your save games from one update to the next but nothing's guaranteed.

You could try downloading the very next update and it'll probably work fine and you can keep updating it but why not just jump in and try it out? You'll probably have to make a couple of fortresses before you get the hang of the new features anyway.

I've already restarted a few because I didn't like what I did with the trees and such and learned from what's new.

I guess it depends on how you define stable and which mode you play. If you want to just avoid crashes then probably a few weeks. If you want to avoid adventure and fortress ending bugs then it will be months is my guess.

I would wait until he optimizes FPS since it's decreasing at a much faster rate in current versions.
