Additional values and dreams
« on: July 18, 2014, 02:44:31 pm »

0.40.01 introduced new personality facets, civilization values that interact with them, and dreams and goals that derive from those values. Of course, Toady only got to things he needed for the most part (viewable here), so I thought we might try to gather more Values and Goals, at least. Perhaps a few personality facets, too.

Values:
KNOWLEDGE - at 50, believes that the pursuit of knowledge is the most important drive for civilization.
at -50, believes that the pursuit of knowledge is a foolish waste of time with no tangible benefit.
Knowledge would interact with CURIOSITY (troubled at being incurious when valuing KNOWLEDGE, and vice versa) and CLOSEMINDED.
Valuing knowledge could lead to the goals "dreams of obtaining obscure knowledge", "dreams of building a library containing vast knowledge", and similar goals.
I suspect that humans would get a 10 to 20 in Knowledge, with the other civs not caring much either way.

WEALTH - at 50, believes that attaining great wealth is an important goal in and of itself.
at -50, considers the drive to obtain wealth a short-sighted desire that hinders self-betterment.
Wealth would interact with GREED (as should commerce, assuming the wiki is right about them not interacting).
Wealth and Commerce sort of overlap, but the values are different enough to both exist, in my mind.
Valuing wealth could lead to the goal "dreams of amassing a great hoard of treasure."
Dwarves would likely get 30 to 40 in wealth, humans 10 to 20, and elves -10 to -20.

RELIGION - at 50, believes that worship of a higher power is an essential part of daily life.
at -50, believes that faith blinds people to the reality of the world.
Religion would interact with ABSTRACT_INCLINED, and possibly with DUTIFULNESS.
Valuing religion could lead to goals like "dreams of building a temple", "dreams of leading a religious group" (with high power), or even "dreams of becoming a god" (with high power and ambition?)
Denying religion could lead to a goal like "dreams of abolishing centers of worship".

HISTORY - at 50, believes that the lessons of ages past still have relevance to this very day.
at -50, believes that the past is dead, gone, and irrelevant at best, and something to not be disturbed at worst.
History does not seem like it should interact with personality facets.
Valuing history could lead to a goal like "dreams of meeting [a prominent, living historical figure]" or maybe even "dreams of being remembers centuries from now" (for highly ambitious characters).
Dwarves and elves would likely have history of 20-30, and humans 10-20.

LIFE_EXPERIENCE - at 50, believes that one's elders should be respected and learned from, for they know better than others.
at -50, believes that one's elders are ignorant of life today, and should not be treated as anything special.
Life experience might interact with DISDAIN_ADVICE.
Dwarves probably have life experience at 20, elves at 50, goblins at some low level?

Goals
The existing goals can all be traced to one value, and each value seems to have a single goal only, at the extreme end of the spectrum. There probably could be more nuances in at least one cast, and chances for two or more values to combine to a single goal.

POWER - this could use with steps before "rule the world" - "rule a community" and "rule a civilization" are easy ones.
Together with Martial prowess or low Peace, you could have "dreams of leading a powerful army". With family, "starting a successful bloodline". With commerce, "creating a grand trading guild". Similar guild dreams could easily exist for craftsmanship and artwork. These guild dreams could also substitute COOPERATION with POWER.
