More Military Woes

After taking a bit of a break, I'm back with 2014.  Nothing like the promise of new, weird, bugs to draw me back into Dwarf Fortress.

I'm having a bit of a problem with my military, although I don't know if it's something I'm doing wrong or if it's something that's broken in the new version.  I assigned some burrows, and scheduled orders to "Defend burrow X".  The squads show the "Defending burrows" status on the units screen, but they just mill about in the barracks instead of heading to the named burrow.

I've tried most of the things on the DF wiki military FAQ page, and I just don't know what I'm doing wrong.  I ended up having to repel my invasion by manually stationing them using the squad orders.  (Of course, that just consisted of the goblins seeing a dwarf, panicking, and fleeing off the map).

maybe the barracks is in the burrow? that may stop them from leaving it.

Maybe they have a minimum for training that is to low, or their schedule says to train. I believe they prioritize their schedule over anything else.

Have you put the military into active duty mode?

I can't remember exactly, but i believe its either 'alerts' or from the military menu, you can select alerts/burrows etc.

At any rate, you need to put your military onto active duty, otherwise they count themselves as being off-duty, and are still able to do jobs; when on active duty the military can not do any other job.

I'll check my DF to make sure this is all accurate in a bit.

I believe I had done what both of you suggested.

I did initially have some problems with my squads ignoring the schedules and only doing civilian jobs. This, however, had them switching from "carpenter" to "axdwarf" (or whatever) and showing "defend burrow" in the unit screen. They just stood in the barracks instead of deploying to the designated burrows.

I'll probably be restarting a new fort in .40.03 anyway, so I'll see how it goes then. I'm guessing I probably did something wrong somewhere. I have a terrible history with the military interface.

I have the exact same issue as you. Patrol route and station work normally but I think the dwarves position themselves less accurately that way, so it can be a little annoying when they get killed because they don't necessarily stay in their designated areas.

Burrows, squads, and patrol routes are notoriously buggy. Dwarves get bad thoughts from being on patrol too long, which is fine, but that also happens when they've been training for a long time. Screwing with uniforms, on-duty food, schedules, barracks, ammo, and all of that has always been a nightmare for me, so lately I've been abandoning military tactics and spamming cage traps everywhere. Seems to work ok, but it's just as exploity as danger room training or the Spear of Enlightenment, so I don't really know what to tell you.

What would it be like to live in a world that was copy/pasted? Would we even notice? If not, how many times have we switched celestial harddrives or whatever?
