Maybe you need something better than cloth shoes?
Not sure how heavy material falls into that equation.

My testing in the arena didn't show any noticeable difference between wearing iron, platinum and nothing for gauntlets/boots, except for how long it takes for me to be trampled to death by an enraged camel, of course.

Kicks are slow.
Punches are of normal speed.
Use punches until your foe faints.
Then, kick them in the face.

I miss headbutts. Wearing a proper spiked helmet, it's a useful attack.

It is clearly a cry for help from a neglected, self absorbed and disempowered juvenile badly in need of affectionate guidance. What a sad, sad display.

Doesn't character strength have a huge impact on how effective kicks and punches are? I remember taking a superdwarven strong dorf, and making him a vampire. His punches were bonecrunching, and I eschewed using a weapon (because it was too fast) and just went around forts punching humans into a gooey pulp.

As elf I have better luck just dropping the crap wood sword and using the copper dagger in the inventory at the getgo.

Wooden swords are useful, you just need to dual-wield them.
