Incredible Lag in adventure mode

Hello! I'm just getting into adventurer mode as a serious thing. I'm having a lot of lag when I try to walk around, including in fast travel mode. I have a medium sized world that genned to 495 years. There are 6 civilizations left alive. Any idea what could be causing it? It is happening every three steps I take like clockwork.

Its probably that you have a medium sized world with 495 years.
Probably shouldn't use a medium sized world, and if you do you shouldn't go past 125 years.

Was your calender simulating the world for more then 3 minutes or so when you started a new game?

I know that the lag is from all NPCs moving around with you (and because they're abundant, it takes a long time for them to do all their actions), but the worst lag I had so far is when I try to walk through a dark fortress with a lot of goblins. One step in one direction can take up to 5 seconds or more to process   ???

Is it actually a bug? Presumably there is going to be a hard limit on the amount of people the game can process with FPS grinding to a halt, and DF will probably never be multi threaded.
