Pastures with Multiple of the same type of Grazer how big?
« on: July 15, 2014, 03:51:21 am »

Or more specifically would I double the  "Area" or would I double the Height/Width (For example would two yak's need 32x32 or would they only need 512)

Since Yak's on the wiki have a recommended Pasture size of 16x16, and the Pasture Area is 256.

And yes I understand they are likely better handled by slaughter but I was gouing to wait to slaughter them till I was a bit more settled with the fortress.

I should point out math is not my strong suit.
I think I doubled the area wrong.

They will only need 512 squares assuming a 16 x 16 is what is needed to support one.

Take the wiki's "pasture size" figures with a block of rock salt.  I'm not sure how they were calculated, but they don't seem to match up very well with actual fortress play.  There's substantial variance in the amount of grass regrowth you get on a given tile (depending on biome, I suppose) -- maybe the wiki editor calculated the pasture sizes for worst-case grass.  You might be able to get away with much smaller pastures than that page says.

If you try to put multiple animals in the same pasture, in 0.34.11, there was a bug that caused them all to head to the same tile of grass at the same time, crowding each other even when other grass tiles were available.  I don't know whether this bug still exists in 0.40.  It's definitely something you'll want to look out for.  If you see unnecessary crowding (ridiculously so, like 6 animals on the same tile with grass all around them), then you'll know the bug is still in the game, and that you should make multiple pastures.
